The ALT Linux development team has announced the availability of the first beta release of ALT Linux 5.0, a Russian general-purpose distribution for servers and workstations. Some of the new features in this release include: choice of two desktop environments – KDE 4 and GNOME; optimised for office deployment, with Internet, electronic mail and office suite of applications; integration with server on many levels, including centralised authentication, virtual containers and file storage; support for interaction between virtual private networks; centralised update mechanism for servers and workstations; convenient web-based system administration.
