What I have been up to lately

December 8th, 2009

One thing many of my readers may have noticed is I have not put any anime news up for a while and have mostly been posting linux news. Main reason why is I am very far behind on linux news and have been trying to catch up. I am behind do to working on a new project one I have been wanting to do for a long time and that is an anime database, which I have been working very hard on lately. The new project is at http://otakudata.org and I hope to have a lot of useful anime info on there. Not only useful but also easy to find what you are looking for, which means easy to navigate.
It actually took me a few weeks just to find a cms that I liked and that would make making an easy to navigate site easier for me.
I started with a great big list of cms’s that I found on open source cms and slowly narrowed it down as I found the cms’s did not have what I needed or were to complicated to use. I ended up getting the list down to just a few cms’s which include: joomla, ocportal, wordpress, bitweaver, and glfusion.
Glfusion was taken out of the picture do to the theme it self being a pain to edit or change and I did not want to be stuck with the default theme.
Joomla was taken out of the picture do to a lot of things about it making me very frustrated.
Ocportal was removed from the list do to a few seo issues I found it has, although I do like the cms it would have been a lot of work to fix the seo issue that I had found.
Bitweaver was taken out do to have primitive it looks an feels, all though I could have edited the theme to get it to do what I wanted but was unsure how got it actually is, like seo and a site with lots of data. I did look for sites currently running it, but found it very difficult to find any. I also asked about it on other sites and no one seemed to have any issue. Although this cms does do exactly what I want but it was taken off the list.
Wordpress is the cms/ blog script I ended up choosing as I know it very well form running this blog and I found with using a few plug ins and skin edits that it can do what I want really easily so that is what I am using. Although I have found as creating the otaku data that I have changed from one plug in to another just because I found a plug in that worked a lot better and I do see that after I get more info on the site that I will be installing a few other plug ins as they are ones I tested but do not need them just yet.

I do also want to tell you that I will be changing the way in which the blog is done it will be more reviews, personal thoughts and less anime and distro news. Do to that I have included links to the places I get the news from.
