WordPress review

May 4th, 2009

When I first heard of WordPress I did not think I would ever use it as I did not see my self starting a blog.  I know that some people consider WordPress more then a blog script and on some sites it is included under the CMS category. Up until now I only saw it as a blog and did not fully understand why people would use it as a CMS or even consider it a CMS.  How ever after using it for a few days now I can fully understand why it would be and could be used as a CMS. It is very easy to use and very powerful. Way more powerful then I was thinking it was.

Ease of use:

As I mentioned above it is pretty easy to use. I have had very little trouble finding what I need in the admin section, although I did ask a few questions on twitter and I am glad there are helpfull people on twitter.  A few of the questions I asked was why do categories that are empty not show up in the category list on the site. I know silly question but I thought it would show them no matter what. Another question was how to get widgets to show up and after looking just for a bit I found them under appearance. It does make sence that they are there. I was just thinking it was under tools or plugins.

My over all thoughts:

I am very impressed with WordPress and think that it may replace ocportal for my other sites I run but on those I will be using ocportal more as a CMS then a blog so it will need a few changes. The only thing I would not want it doing if I used it as a CMS is organize things by date so am looking for a way to get it to organize in other ways like alphabetic, I am thinking there might be a plugin for it which I am looking for at the time but wanted to write my review before I did so.
